A group of friends from an art college in England gather to celebrate the 40th birthday of their most famous member -- a songwriter and drummer for a rock group that's been touring for 20 years. The bulk of the novel takes place over a weekend when the life choices made by the six original members come to a head in both positive and negative ways. Set in Brittany, the reader gets a real sense of how different this part of France is from urban Paris. Juliette, the chef for the rock star, is the catalyst who lays bare the emotional dependencies of the group and the effect it has had on the way their lives have turned out so far. Both a midlife crisis and a starting a new chapter in life story, the novel is constructed with a prologue, the weekend events, and an epilogue one year later. I liked Tunnicliffe's descriptions and characters enough to seek out her two previous novels.
