As Inspector Armand Gamache, the former Chief of Homicide for the Surete du Quebec embarks on his new journey at his new job, he is given a mysterious map that leads to many deeper secrets. At the academy, Gamache sees four officers and a dead professor. Along with the professor’s body is a copy of the ancient map. One of the officers, Amelia Choquet, seems to be following Gamache everywhere he goes in a guarded and piercing way. Gamache’s and Amelia’s mysterious relationship is the heart of this investigation, eventually leading to Inspector Gamache’s possible involvement in the crime. This was a fantastic, complex, crime thriller and possibly one of Louise Penny’s best stories. The fictitious characters in the town of Quebec Penny describe cultivates the mood and aura of the novel. The novel intertwines the inspector’s history serving as a police officer with a very compelling mystery.
