From the title to the last paragraph, this is among the most devastating of the Brunetti series. The underlying crime is not as simple as it appeared, in large part because the victim's family didn't have the strength to (literally) look at the facts before them, even if they had a nagging sense that all was not as it seemed. As with all Brunetti mysteries, even after the questions are answered, no one feels that justice is possible. This one, however, does leave the reader with a bit of hope for life after the end.
