Over the years, "Death and the Maiden" by the German romantic poet Matthias Claudius has re-surfaced in many guises, most notably in a famous song and string quartet by Schubert. Here, Bauer makes full use of the idea, to remarkably good effect, rendering what might otherwise have been a run-of-the-mill psychological thriller into a modern day work of art. Give me your hand, you beautiful and tender form! I am a friend, and come not to punish. Be of good cheer! I am not fierce, Softly shall you sleep in my arms! A fair bit of suspension of disbelief is required here, but when you sit down to partake of this kind of entertainment, you accept that as part of the ticket price. The killer promises us an EXHIBITION. It's all part of the show.
