Reviewed by Harry C. The Frozen Prince is Maxym M. Martineau’s second installment in her beast tamer trilogy. Following behind the first book, Kingdom of Exiles. The Frozen Prince takes full advantage of all the worldbuilding done in the first book and turns its focus onto its characters instead. The Frozen Prince is, in many ways, the perfect sequel. Not only does it continue uncovering the main mystery of the first book, that being Leena’s exile and the workings behind the scenes, and explores the other consequences born from the climactic battle at the end of Kingdom of Exiles, it also delves into Leena’s relationship with her new family, the Cruor, and her newfound Anam Cara (soulmate in charmer-tongue), Noc, and the latter’s mysterious past only hinted at in the first book coming back to haunt him. That being said however, I, as a person who was much more fascinated by the world presented in Kingdom of Exiles, did not enjoy this book as much, entirely due to my personal interests. While there is a bit more worldbuilding, especially in regards to Hireath and Wilheim, like I mentioned above, this book leans much heavier on character relationships and not worldbuilding. Leena’s and Noc’s relationship being the main focus, I found the plotline with Calem’s “Condition” and Leena’s feelings towards that to also be very interesting. Of course, there is still the main plot that twists and turns across the span of the book. (I feel like my biases need to be expressed but I also need to give a fair review, so I will give two scores, one taking in to account my opinions and one viewing it from as objectively as I can.) My opinion: 3/5 Objectively: 4/5
