Kiera Cass’s novella, The Prince is part of the Selection series. If you haven't yet started reading The Selection series, this short novella is a great place to start! Instead of America, it is said from the point of view of Prince Maxon. I thought it was great that Maxon got to tell his side of the story. I liked getting a glimpse into his thoughts and emotions as The Selection began, as well as his impressions of each of the girls, including America. This short story adds to Prince Maxon's appeal by allowing readers to see him as a complete character rather than someone else's interpretation of him. Furthermore, it alludes to another possible love interest in Maxon's life before The Selection. However, I must admit that this novella was far too short, leaving me yearning for more of Maxon's perspective. Maxon's view on the entire Selection, not just the beginning, would have been fascinating to see. Rate: 3.5/5 @youngtween of the Hamilton Public Library's Teen Review Board I would rate The Selection Stories by Kiera Cass 4.5/5 stars. This book contains 2 novellas, The Prince and The Guard. In The Prince, we learn more about Maxon’s opinions about the Selection. We see how it was like for him to say goodbye to one of his closest friends right before starting the selection, then welcome 35 girls into his home. We learn about his first impression of America, along with many of the other girls in the competition. It was very interesting to get this alternate point of view, and it helps us understand exactly what he thinks of America. The Guard tells Aspen’s story. Throughout the Selection series, I found Aspen very protective of America and it seemed as if he was trying to always get between her and Maxon. While reading The Guard, I began to understand exactly why he did what he did, and we learn that he never truly stopped loving America. We also get to see him break out and have his own happy love story, which was a very nice ending to his story. I recommend reading these books after reading The Selection trilogy. @Dolphin05 of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library The Prince: This was an amazing story written from the prince's perspective. I am, and will forever be, a Team Maxon member. From the first moment I met him, (through America's eyes) I knew he was the one for her. (The one, am I not punny?) Not that there is anything wrong with Aspen, it is simply the fact that he has never felt right. No, I am not shallow or looking just for Maxon's crown. I just really like the idea of a charming prince with good manners and a hidden humour streak in him. He is legitimately the ideal inner princess girl's dream. But we get to see what the perfect prince was thinking while meeting our favourite protagonist, America Singer! 5/5 stars. The Guard: From Aspen's perspective, I guess things were kind of rough. He gets the girl he is in love with to sign up for a chance that could benefit her financially, but also damage the relationship between the two of them. But he chose to help "her" over "them," which means he has some selflessness. But when he broke up with her, it kind of ruffled my view on him. he may have done it as to protect her, in case they got caught. Maybe he put up the harder exterior to end it harshly in case America resisted against his efforts to keep them safer. I really hope that is what he was thinking, and it wasn't his cowardice of being rejected over a prince. But now, we get to see him as a royal Guard! 5/5 stars. @Siri of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library
