Dr Siri, the septugenarian National Coroner of Laos, tries to find a serial killer in this very funny mystery. The insights into the mind of the serial killer are trite and the book is marred by the occasional tumble into sentimentality, but these are minor faults set against the fine characterisation, vivid setting and gentle humour. Set in Laos in 1978, the charming and cynical Dr Siri has to cope with the bungling and corrupt Communist government, aided by a cast of colourful secondary characters.
