How do people find these quirky, addictive books? The kind of book where you lose yourself, you can’t stop reading, you completely live in these characters and their situation and can’t get them out of your head for days? I found this one after accidentally hitting upon Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine (no idea why that one found me - first-time fiction by women is my jam lately). It was on Reese Witherspoon’s book club list and the only one that looked good to me, but also looked kind of stupid, to be honest. I started assuming I’d just skip it after my “give it a chance” first fifty pages, but by that time I was delighted by everything about this book. The format is perfect for my summer attention span, the characters are adorable without being stupid, the plot is just right for something I don’t want to think too hard about, and it just went by way too quickly. Since it’s not deep and not going to change your life, just enjoy the few hours you have with these characters and then, later, when you are doing something else, you’ll think back and think about your own family, your own experiences, and laugh and laugh. You don’t get to choose your family but you can choose how you deal with them. And the way these characters interact will give you joy and maybe some ideas.
