Dodsworth
eBook - 2012
Sinclair Lewis's Dodsworth follows the life and career of ambitious Sam Dodsworth, who builds his fortune as an innovative automobile designer and then retires at the relatively young age of fifty. Upon his retirement, Dodsworth and his wife, Fran, set out on a leisurely trip across Europe. Dissatisfied with her life in a small town, Fran embraces European sensibilities, distancing herself from her husband and driving her marriage to the breaking point. First published in 1929, Dodsworth has been adapted for the stage, film and television. Add a CommentOne of my favorite Sinclair Lewis novels. The story of a car company president, newly retired, who travels to Europe with his younger, much-loved and selfish wife. There are some truly vicious observations on marriage in this one; not surprising that Fran has some real-life roots in Lewis's first wife, whom he divorced.
