I first heard about this release from an episode of @armchairexppod , in which neurosurgeon and medical reporter Dr.Sanjay Gupta discussed the importance of prevention for illnesses such as dementia and Alzheimer’s. ⁣

I have to admit that a lot of the information in the book flew right over my head, especially that concerning families and caretakers of those already diagnosed. However, there was a section on advices for people who wanted to protect their brain health which I especially appreciated, and here I will be sharing Dr.Gupta’s five pillars of brain protection: ⁣

1.Exercise and movement ⁣
2.Sense of learning and discovery ⁣
3.Sleep and relaxation⁣
4.Nutrition⁣
5.Social connection ⁣

Most of these are pretty self-explanatory, but for a couch potato like myself, there has been many misconceptions about working out. Rather than spending hours at the gym, apparently all that is needed to remediate a sedentary lifestyle is as little as two minutes of moving every hour and one hour of exercise after work!⁣

I was also fascinated by a Dutch dementia community as described by Dr.Gupta. Rather than a hospital-like facility, this community mimics an ordinary neighborhood with a variety of services and entertainments except all employees are trained medics. Patients are also placed with those with similar experiences so that even if they are losing their memories, the environment retains a sense of normalcy and familiarity. ⁣

Disclaimer though: I definitely did not absorb everything this book had to offer, as I focused only on sections relevant to my current circumstances. There are also phone numbers and named organizations for those who need them, however, and it is definitely an informational tool book for people at all stages of mind enhancement.

Well intentioned but, overall, disappointingly basic. If you're already reasonably informed on this topic, you're not likely to learn much that's new to you. I wound up skimming it all the way through just to be sure I wasn't missing any nuggets of wisdom (there were a few for me, such as the link between hydration and brain fog, but I really didn't need to be told not to eat donuts).

Reputed Neurosurgeon Gupta has the ability to make complex medical matters simple. He explains things in layman's terms on TV and does so in this book also. "Keep Sharp" scared me at first because Gupta tells us that diseases like Alzheimer's begin in our brains decades before symptoms show up and there are really no effective treatments for them. However, the sub-title of the book "Build a Better Brain at Any Age," is reassuring and this is what we need to focus on. Gupta has some easy exercises, both physical and mental, to practice that he assures us will go a long way in managing dementia. Reading this book will definitely keep us sharp.

Brain research put into plain language. The book is an easy-to-read, basic primer for anyone beginning a self-care journey. If you are already leading a healthy lifestyle, you can skip this one as there is nothing new here.

Just placed a reserve on this book which is on order.
Noticed that you have a wrong spelling for "Build"
It must be Covid !
