This novel, written in 1973 and supposedly semi-autobiography, is set in WW II Liverpool. It tells the story of a young girl, raised by her aunts, who becomes infactuated by an American soldier. The novel tells of the repressed emotions of the lower middle-class, people's isolation, and how this may explode in violence.
