Burke let Nicky's tox screen results (page 296) just slide by. No matter what happened that night, she was dangerously overmedicated and intoxicated. The lab tests didn't lie.

2019; Harper/Harper Collins

<b>Please note</b> that a secondary character, Olivia Randall, is from a prior standalone novel [book:The Ex|25817395]. There isn't anything in this novel that would be a spoiler for The Ex. It's just a fun thing for fans.

I enjoyed this book, it was easy to read and I was intrigued to see where the case would go. I also wanted to confirm if I had the right killer picked out. At first, I thought this might be one of those romantic triangle books where we have two smart women fighting over a bland-ish guy. It moved into a story about an insecure woman who seemed to be on the edge of a breakdown. Chloe was a bit bland. It seemed like she was a composite of many characters in one without getting a sense of who and what she really felt. Even the #themtoo movement in this book lacked the passion. Chloe, a journalist/writer, seems to have made the #themtoo movement come to the forefront but it doesn't really sound like she cares about it beyond her own career. I wasn't a fan of her but I still was invested to see where the story would go, especially with Ethan, her son. When Adam, her husband, is murdered the secrets come out like it always does.

As the title suggests this is a book about two sisters - Chloe and Nicole, and how they battle one another to be the better daughter/sister. Yet, this story line isn't very prominent until later. It gets mentioned in the beginning and does get sprinkled throughout the book but very inconsistently. <spoiler>This and the title kind of gives away who the killer is, and I wanted to see if my guess was correct</spoiler>. I think this one is good for the beach as it is enjoyable read, as long as you don't think too much about the story. It was only when I was sitting down to write the review that some issues came up for me, lol. I lowered my rating to 3.5 from 4 to reflect some of these issues.

Mystery/courtroom drama...

Chloe is a successful writer and magazine editor. She has it all...a happy marriage with Adam, a wonderful teenage son Ethan, and a career she has always dreamed of. But her perfect world comes crashing down when her husband is found murdered in their summer home.

As the police investigate this murder, they begin to realize that all is perhaps not what it seemed for this happy family/couple. For starters, Ethan is Chloe’s stepson….and nephew. Chloe’s husband Adam had once been married to her sister Nicky and Adam ended up with sole custody of Ethan, so a tangled web of relationships is revealed right away. And then there’s the small issue of the murder...who did it? And why?

PROS: The Better Sister has all the aspects of a classic murder mystery...husband killed, and the family is suspected...all this accompanied by a murder trial. It seems to have the right framework for a great book!

CONS: Time seems to tick on quickly in this book, four months here, another month there...and yet NOTHING seems to happen. To summarize this book in one word: BORING. Also, what was up with the me it made no sense whatsoever, but maybe I was just missing something.

YES or NO: It’s an unfortunate NO - there are much better thrillers to spend your valuable time with than this one...

When Chloe finds her husband, Adam Macintosh murdered, she becomes a suspect. Then the cops turn to her stepson as the suspect. Adam's first he Wife Nicky is Chloe's sister. They become close and work together to prove that her son is not the murderer. This book will hold your interest from beginning to end. It will also keep you guessing as to who killed Adam.

This one is truly a page-turner! After the mysterious death of her husband Adam, Chloe is swept up in a whirlwind of questioning herself and her relationships with those around her. Her own stepson is charged with the murder. His mother, Chloe's sister relocates to lend support. The complicated relationship between Chloe and her sister Nicky are at the center of this narrative. There are many surprises in store for the reader. Burke fans will find this to be an enjoyable read. It was a bit too political for my tastes, but is definitely a worthy successor to "The Wife."
