An action-packed, horrific monster of a film, not suitable for all ages!

N.B.: Some nudity scenes and expletives throughout...

Let's be honest. It's a disaster, and it is difficult to watch.

In 1977, Dario Argento made the original Suspiria on a shoestring budget, with very poor production values. It was almost like a high school production (literally), but it had style and a very particular flair. The original movie was 98 minutes. Sometimes is posted in You Tube, you can watch 10 minutes and get a flavour of it.

Luca Guadagnino, backed by Amazon Studios and a bunch of other companies, decided to remake the movie. Just think about it for a minute, REMAKE this movie. I immediately question his wisdom, why would he do that? As successful and talented as he is, he could film any story he could possibly want. Anyway. Ultimately, the new Suspiria has also quite a bit of style, but it feels bloated at a length of 153 minutes (one full hour longer than the original). It is so long, and it drags itself so slowly at points, and it has so many unnecessary subplots, that the whole movie collapses under its own weight... way before the end.

THE BAD: too long and tedious, too preachy (Guadagnino keeps suggesting there are important subthemes here, in reality he doesn't explore any), too confusing, the gore is too graphic and it does not scare or unsettle, it is just gross to watch. Total waste of a large budget, and a talented cast.

RECOMMENDED for: people who wants to see gore for the sake of gore, for fans of the fantastic Tilda Swinton, fans of the director, people who love films with beautiful photography.

NOT RECOMMENDED for: everybody else, especially people who like psychological horror (a more complex feeling similar to feeling unsettled, to feel the creeps, not blood for the sake of blood), people who doesn't appreciate a condescending director.

I lasted 30 minutes. 2 1/2 hours of who cares. I scanned through just in case and I was not won over by this self-serving clunker.

Just plain bad. Fell asleep 5 minutes in and then fast forwarded through the balance of the film.

Italian director Luca Guadagnino's follow up to his lovely, achingly romantic "Call Me by Your Name" is a remake of Dario Argento's 1977 giallo cult classic "Suspiria." It's and odd choice, and it clearly didn't really find an audience, but it does have a lot going for it. Guadagnino's forsakes the bold color palette of the original for washed out grays and blues of Cold War Berlin. The story is the same: an American dancer (Dakota Johnson) discovers a coven of witches in the studio where she is a student. However, it's short on plot and long on style. It's basically an art movie take on the horror movie. It's also kinda insane, which I liked. The always great Tilda Swinton (Look for her in a second role!) is the head of the studio. It doesn't make much sense, but it will sear your eyeballs. Score by Radiohead's Thom Yorke.

While this remake is still about a young American student in a Berlin Dance Academy run by a coven of witches, much of the script has been altered to include significant dance elements, horror scenes, Nazis in 1943, West Berlin with its wall in 1977 and Dario Argento's mythology of "The Three Mothers." Perhaps the film would be more enjoyable without the Nazis subplot. 4 stars for the effort and 2 stars for how the story was told.

Many in IMDb already. Thanks to contributors. These are most memorable:

Madame Blanc: Movement is never mute. It is a language. It's a series of energetic shapes written in the air like words forming sentences. Like poems. Like prayers.
"Three Mothers" lost to time, predating all Christian invention. Pre-God, pre-devil. Mother Tenebrarum, Mother Lachrymarum and Mother Suspiriorum. Darkness, tears, and sighs.
These are not in IMDb but good to remember:

Where'd you come from?
The Amish split from the Mennonites in the 17th century. They were worried the Mennonites were becoming too liberal.
...of Susanna Bannion, of all the women of your undoing... every memory will vanish. They will melt away in the sun and be gone.
On the 11th of November, 1943, the commandant of the camp, a man named Burger... ordered all 40,000 detained there stand outside in the cold for a census. Hours and hours passed. Some hundreds died of exposure.
