Readers who liked Numair Salmalín before will learn to love him even more, now. Young Arram Draper is just as compassionate, brilliant, and powerful as the great mage he eventually grows up to be. This story is a long awaited in-depth look at the journey that made Arram Draper into the powerful and devoted mage that he is in Pierce's Immortals Quartet. The devoted relationships he develops with his classmates paired with his struggles to accept the cruelties of Carthaki customs shape his resolve to grow in power and change the world for the better.

For some reason this book did not capture me the same way other Pierce books have in the Tortall universe. I struggled with feeling motivated to read the book, I appreciate the attempt to expand the universe even further but I found the pacing of the book a little slow and I found myself wondering when the action was really going to start.

This was fantastic, I didn't realize how much I had missed Numair until I read this, and I can't wait for the next book!

I waited many years for this book and I couldn't have been happier with the end results. If you have read any of the other series in the Tortall Universe then you know Numair (Arram)! He is a brilliant character and I was so happy to see he got his own story!

I'll admit it's been a number of years since I've read Tamora Pierce or checked in on what she was doing now, so I wasn't as familiar as I could have been with what I was jumping back into. However, once I got into it everything felt like I was coming home again. Right back into this beautiful world I adored so much growing up, it was wonderful. And the story being about Numair's early life? HECK YEAH!

There is something so grand about the way magic is described in this universe, and I loved seeing the tension and differences between tribal and the academic/scholarly Masters. Each Master had a very different approach based on what they were teaching and how they came by it themselves. I think the best descriptor is rich, the magic feels rich and the world feels rich, and I just loved it.

I've been waiting over a decade for this book, and it didn't disappoint! Little Arram is completely recognizable as the precursor to the intelligent, focused, and charming adult that we first met in "The Immortals Quartet." Both those of us already familiar with him and new readers will immediately pick up on three important themes: Arram's exploration of his magic, his friendships with Ozorne and Varice, and Arram's connection to the larger socio-political connection to Carthak, particularly to its practice of slavery, which Arram abhors. The book's end left me VERY MUCH looking forward to the continuation of Arram's story.

I'm so happy to be back in Pierce's world. There are a ton of things that I could connect, or place, as it's been a while since I read the other books set in this world, but it's still very enjoyable as a stand alone.

Ever since reading the Immortals series by Tamora Pierce, I have wanted to know more about Dane's husband, Numair. Now I've gotten my wish. I loved this book and can't wait for the next one. Tamora Pierce is one of my favorite authors and I am always anxiously awaiting her next book.
