How well do you know the people you love...? Best friends Noah Sandler and Abdi Mahad have always been inseparable. But when Noah is found floating unconscious in Bristol's Feeder Canal, Abdi can't—or won't—tell anyone what happened. Just back from a mandatory leave following his last case, Detective Jim Clemo is now assigned to look into this unfortunate accident. But tragedy strikes and what looked like the simple case of a prank gone wrong soon ignites into a public battle. Noah is British. Abdi is a Somali refugee. And social tensions have been rising rapidly in Bristol. Against this background of fear and fury two families fight for their sons and for the truth. Neither of them know how far they will have to go, what demons they will have to face, what pain they will have to suffer. Because the truth hurts.

5 stars. This terrific read by Macmillan is the sequel to "What She Knew" but can easily be read as a stand alone. The book is about the friendship between two 15 year old boys from different worlds. Noah is the son of wealthy parents who has terminal cancer and Abdi is the child of Somali refugees. Noah and Abdi are involved in a clandestine night out and something happens and Noah is hurt. A reporter writes a story that makes it appear to be a racially motivated incident. Abdi vanishes. DI Jim Clemo doesn't believe that Abdi meant to hurt Noah but is disturbed at his vanishing. And as the investigation moves along, there are sinister links to one of the families that complicate the issue. An absorbing and hearbreaking and brilliant novel. I highly recommend this book.

Gilly MacMillan is a skilled writer who made a thriller reader out of me. Her stories are concise and plausible with interesting characters who connect with the reader in all sorts of ways. I would rank her above the other domestic writers that are so popular right now. I love than I can never guess and that she ties up loose ends where others leave you scratching your head.

A moving story about two boys with very different backgrounds. They form a very close friendship - but tragedy follows.

This book picks up right where What She Knew left off with DI Clemo having finished his therapy and heading back to work. I didn't really like the Clemo character in What She Knew but I warmed to him a little more in this book as his character was given more dimension and insight. There are no big plot twists or surprises in this book; a steady flow of breadcrumbs lets you figure it all out.

Two fourteen-year old boys sneak out at night but in the morning, one boy is in ICU and the other refuses to speak.
