According to behavioral economics research, financial literacy training is often ineffective because it is too detailed and doesn't face up to the limitations of human behavior and thinking. This easy-to-read book, co-authored by a behavioral economist and a comedian, walks you through a few of the biggest psychological traps surrounding money. The final section of the book builds on this understanding, consolidating it into a few principles to apply in your daily life. (I found the double-edged nature of "mental accounting" particularly interesting.) The basic idea is to recognize human weaknesses and come up with realistic strategies to overcome these weaknesses. Building a healthy relationship with money shouldn't depend on unrealistic expectations of superhuman willpower, perfect rationality, or powerful memory. In fact, Ariely and Kreisler argue, your very weaknesses can often be harnessed to lock you into healthier habits.
