I'm loathe to compare GHOST IN THE SHELL to BLADE RUNNER, but the cinematography is that good; what a shame that the comparison has to end with the candy wrapper. Open up GHOST and it's a mess. I’m angry that such lush aesthetics were squandered on this anemic script. Scarlett Johansson turns in her most wooden performance as Major, a human brain in a synthetic body. Perhaps she decided to play the character as an emotionless robot. If she did, she should have rethought her approach. Other characters are similarly misused. It’s impossible to care about any of them. I’m a huge fan of the animated series, and this turkey bears little resemblance to its progenitor. I really don’t mind the story being changed, but if you’re going to change it, it had better be as good as the original.

Ghost in a Shell is like Tokyo on steroids--stimulus overload but lacking a soul. Scarlett Johannson's flat acting performance fails to impress in a body suit that makes her look near naked. Denmark's Pilou Asbaek, France's Juliette Binoche and Australia's Daniel Henshall offer some much-needed depth to an otherwise lack lustre story line that butchered the manga roots from which it was derived. Lovers of all things digital will relish a feast for the eyes but it is a flick that falls short of wider audience appeal.

It was a unique experience that I enjoyed. It's worth a watch.

This was... okay. Visually, it was stunning and captured the feel of the original anime, but other than that... meh. I was actually pretty disappointed in Scarlett's performance. Typically I love her work, but I'll admit it may have been the script she was given to work with. Honestly, the Asian side characters were really what killed it for me. Fine, I'll say it- casting American actors in an important Asian story is just as off-putting as it would be to see an "ethnic" cast in a story about, oh, say, Gettysburg. (However- in the case of Hamilton, there was an actual message behind the casting.) But in the case of this story, what's the point? Other than trying to be box office fodder. In the end, while I don't regret seeing it per se, but overall the film was fairly forgettable. I'll stick to the anime.

Watchable but Scarlett did not put in a good performance.

Is this the future? Will the future be dark, bleak, emotionless and boring?
