Ghost in a Shell does a better job of making a live action version of the anime than I would have expected. As many other reviewers stated, the movie is visually amazing. If you are a fan of Cyberpunk dystopian futures, you will love the overall look of this movie. Aside from that, there isn't anything amazing about this adaptation. It isn't epic or mindblowing, but it is good, and that's good enough for me to enjoy it. If you twisted my arm for a complaint, I would say that it was kinda of 'meh'. The GITS manga was released almost 30 years ago, and the anime was released more than 20 years ago. The story is also something we've seen before: Cyborg super soldier discovers their mysterious origins are tied to a current case they're working on. That isn't bad, its just not new. The overall movie would have benefitted immensely if it was rated R instead of PG.

I like that it was first based on an anime/manga.

Lackluster adaptation of anime -- some visual spectacle, but everything feels secondhand and sluggishly imitative. The director seems to feel that Johansson's body in a skin-tight iPhone-inspired sheath will provide some cohesion to the movie, and so doesn't worry much about things like plot, character development, or dialogue, all of which are rudimentary and pilfered from other, better movies.

Very good. Let's hope that inserting human brains into robots won't really come to pass.

I also hope that Johansson won't let herself be typecast as a robot or superhuman. She seems to be on her way to doing just that, if past history is any indication.

Very interesting story.

Visually stunning! Based on an anime, this movie features a cool commentary on society's relationship with technology. There is a dystopian science fiction feel to this movie - set in Japan with holographic advertisements at every turn (I think I would go crazy living in this city) and people who enhance themselves in various ways with technology. The Hanka Corporation is experimenting by inserting human brains in robots - the person lives on, but the body is no longer fragile and is the pinnacle of beauty. At least, that is the dream. There is an interesting commentary on if society really is headed to a future like this..

I give it a thumbs down. I'm not a big Scarlett Johansson fan and couldn't tell if she was acting robotic or mechanical. But I didn't really care. Visual effects are good, but it didn't tell an interesting story.

I've not read any of the comics, so my assessment is untainted. I thought the film was simply superb. Scarlett Johansson was mesmerizing. The story was a good story that was well worth watching. The special affects and the choreographing were great.

I'd recommend ANY other adaptation of the comics: the multiple anime shows and movies are all richer and more vibrant than this movie version. (And less problematic in their casting).

Problems I had with this version:
the grayed out colors, turning Major into basically a child instead of a long-term military/police professional, displacing her strong adult friendships with her colleagues with a mother-type relationship with the cybernetic scientist, the lack of focus and meaning to the landscapes and framing ("there's a lot going on in this city shot but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be looking at?"), literal lack of color, basically a simplification of everything from characters backstories to coworker friendships to politics, etc.

Disappointing. Could have been a good movie but wound up being a cross between Robocop & Blade Runner plus something else I can't identify...also, what was up with Major's voice - you couldn't make out what she was saying half of the time?! Just annoying when a good plotline falls flat - see something else instead and don't waste your time.

Find many memorable quotes in IMDb already, these two in particular:

You are more than just a weapon. You have a soul... a ghost. When we see our uniqueness as a virtue, only then will we find peace.
