Paterson is a bus driver in the city of Paterson, New Jersey - they share the name. Every day, Paterson adheres to a simple routine: he drives his daily route, observing the city as it drifts across his windshield and overhearing fragments of conversation swirling around him; he writes poetry into a notebook; he walks his dog; he stops in a bar and drinks exactly one beer. He goes home to his wife, Laura. By contrast, Laura's world is ever changing.

This is definitely a 'film-fest' movie which I found totally enjoyable. If it were about nothing more than the very funny bull dog, I'd have been happy. However, Adam Driver (who masters every part he's ever played) was just wonderful as a basic nobody in a nondescript town with a lack-luster life. Not sure I'd recommend it for everybody.

oh wow and we thought Jeb Bush was low energy. this guy never even screws his wife and she's the most interesting thing in the movie.

This offbeat project is actually very engaging, bringing droll humor and sweet-hearted feeling to its low-key affirmation of ordinary life.

As Paterson makes these rounds again and again in his bus, Jarmusch unhurriedly crafts a cinematic ode to finding both art and delight in the quotidian.
To the people who think there is little to no " plot " I guess they are not familiar with " art " movies.

IMDb's description describes this film pretty well..."A quiet observation of the triumphs and defeats of daily life, along with the poetry evident in its smallest details."
Paterson (Adam Driver) plays a Paterson, New Jersey bus driver that seems bored and tries to write poetry. Even the director seems bored as Paterson's watch is almost a character, as it's face is shown in the morning and fast forwarded during work. I took the cue a couple of times to fast forward the film as there were many slow scenes that i found to not anything to the film.
I found the character's poetry uninspiring, no matter how much he had tried and found that the more interesting parts of the film, was his artistic, and ever optimistic girlfriend, Laura (Golshifteh Farahani); the bar's Hall of Fame; and the bus passengers conversations.
I was hopeful for more, as i had seen Adam Driver in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and the 2016 Silence, portraying a Jesuit priest in Japan. Often the film rests on the talents of the actors, but the script nor the directing supports them.

You know what you're in store for when you (try to) watch an "art" movie. This one is not as bad as suffering through a Fassbinder movie, or another Werner Herzog disaster. But that's the best I can say for it. It's close though.

Pages of quotes in IMDb. These from Japanese poet among the best in mho:

My poetry only in Japanese. No translation. Poetry in translations is like taking a shower with a raincoat on. ... Sometimes an empty page presents more possibilities.
