This book is a timely, effective, and emotional look at one refugee family's experience as they flee war and look for a new home. The language is simple enough for children to easily grasp, although it packs no punches about the grim realities refugees face. I love how the fairy tale-esque illustrations contribute to a sense of both fear and hope, and the open-ended conclusion is the perfect segue into important questions for kids and families to discuss, including who belongs and who deserves to be welcomed and safe.

Expressive, unique, and sometimes scary drawings narrate the journey of a refugee family.
Well told and not to long, this is a book that would spark a meaningful conversation afterwards.

Prepare to get emotional reading this.

A beautifully illustrated book that brings to light the journey of refugees; it shows the behind the scenes and harrowing story of the challenges and sorrows migrants face, but brings hope that finding a new home and happy beginnings are possible as the journey continues.

I had never seen a picture book that talks about refugee issues. Big bonus points just for that! And the illustrations are amazing.

A hauntingly beautiful collage of migration and refugee stories, The Journey shows the deeply personal side of the escape from war and violence. Sanna’s stunningly detailed illustrations are extremely expressive, and made me very emotional throughout this read.

Beautiful book, but for me, it really was too much of a mishmash of stories. I get what the author is trying to do, but for me it didn't work.

This is a lovely, sad, extremely timely picture book about a family fleeing a war in an unspecified country. The parallels to the Syrian civil war and the refugee crisis in Europe will be unmistakable to adults, but the story is told simply enough to be extremely accessible to children who might not understand the real-world conflicts the book draws upon. It has the feeling of a fairy tale, and the artwork is absolutely beautiful -- I'm so glad this book exists, and hope that it will find a wide audience.
