In the year 1206 Norway is ravaged by civil war. Aided by rebel group the Birch Legs, the Norwegian King fights for survival against the Church's Bishopsmen, who seek to supplant the throne. On his deathbed after falling ill, the King soon welcomes a son, born in secrecy, as half the Kingdom wants him dead. I wouldn't be surprised that this movie was made only for TV showings. That was the level of Norwegian production here. Great ski scenes though!

I did not expect much of this. I thought at first that it was about Scotland's James VI, but it is about some Norwegian king. I do not know any of that history, and I do not speak the language, so I had to read the sub-titles - another problem. But it is a great story. I followed most of the politics, but it did not really matter. There is something about the bad Church, but it seemed to be about power rather than faith, so it was not really about religion, but just another story of good vs bad, with the bad guy wearing robes.
It is a great story of saving an infant that will one day lead the country to peace. There are great action shots on skis. Beautiful countryside. Lots of snow in a place where they understand snow and cold, and do not shrink from it. It was about dedication. One guy had this great battle axe and swung it like it was very heavy and not made of plastic.
I did have a problem with so many bearded men in that it was difficult to say who was who, but that was minor..

An OK movie. Great ski scenes. The English dubbing is not great, better to watch it in the original Norwegian with English subtitles, more authentic.

If you've ever skied the Birkenbeiner race in the US, Australia or Norway, this is the story behind the origins of the race. Very well done, with great skiing scenes, enough action to keep interest, but not too much violence. Politics is the same in any culture, any time period. But good wins out in the end.

Norwegian medieval politics! The King is killed by one of his sons, but the King had a newborn bastard son and the rebels side with the infant. I lost the audio half way through the DVD - didn't really matter since there are subtitles (it is in Norwegian). Action packed with people fighting and escaping, in cross country skis. I was a little lost in with the story and the different groups: royal loyalist, church-related gangs and others. Supposedly based on fact. Chilly Norwegian weather and the poor baby bearing through it being looked after by warriors.
