This book was quite good. I liked how there was suspense and how a lot happened. I really enjoyed reading this book and could not put it down. Overall, this was a great book.

SUMMARY: Jack, Cass, and Aly are back in America and go home to regroup. They come up with a wild scheme to get kidnapped on purpose by the massa to get the remaining shards of the loculus of healing. But first, they go after another of the loculi. They make a mess of things, unexpected people show up, but they do end up in the hands of the massa who play mind games with the three kids. The massa calls them tests. They are taken back to the island which is being revamped to the massa's standards. Those who are still alive after the massa took over have become rebels. At the island, they see Marco again as well as some new people, try to steal the loculi, run away, and are caught, but get away again and then watch people die. Then a big bad enemy from their first adventure to get the fourth loculus comes back to haunt them. Plus A LOT MORE! Whew...what didn't happen in this story?

THE GOOD: This book was slightly better than the last one in that it had a bit more direction. Some of the people who seemed to be on the wrong side come back to the good side. Some people who are thought dead, come back as well. There is plenty of humor to keep you going and of course the desire to see what happens to the characters I have been following since book 1.
THE NOT AS GOOD: The beginning of the book is slow. It seems like the author is running out of steam. The plot was here there and everywhere and felt like a bad soap opera at times. In this book it felt like everything that could go wrong did go wrong which felt rather pointless and sad. There was a lot of moaning by the characters and feeling sorry for themselves. And where did Jack's dad go? He sorta fell out of the plot with no good explanation. There was a lot more personal violence in this book. Guns shooting at the kids, people dying left and right, explosions, massive injuries and bleeding. This book really showed more of a dark side and felt more like a lead up to the next book which I believe is the conclusion.

3.5 stars which rounds up to 4

AGE RECOMMENDATION: Grades 5-9 due to violence and maturity
