The Couple Next Door
eBook - 2016
"May and Nico seem to have it all: a loving relationship, a wonderful home and their beautiful baby, Cora. But one night, when they are at a dinner party next door, their daughter goes missing. They'd left her at home with the baby monitor on and had been checking on her every half hour, yet sometime between their last check and the time they get home, the baby disappears without a trace. Suspicion immediately focuses on the devastated parents, then on May, the shattered mother who has been suffering from post-partum depression. But the truth is a much more complicated story, and inside the curtained house, an unsettling, nerve-wracking account of what actually happened and of what may have happened to baby Cora unfolds. Detective Rasbach knows that the panicked couple is hiding something; May and Nico soon learn that each is keeping secrets, some of which they've kept for years; and baby Cora is still missing. A chilling tale of deception, duplicity and unfaithfulness, The Couple Next Door will keep readers breathless until the final, gruesome and utterly unexpected twist."--

Her thoughts speed up and become less rational; her mind makes fantastic leaps. It's not that things don't make sense to her when she's like this — sometimes they make 'more' sense. They make sense the way dreams do. It's only when the dream is over that you see how odd it all was, how it actually didn't make sense at all.

Suspenseful but towards the end I accurately guessed who the major culprit was. However, the end really surprised me, wasn't expecting it. Overall, I recommend this read if you're into thriller/suspense novels.
Shari writes a good story, but the suspense doesn't last--about halfway through you find out who kidnapped the baby, although there is more mystery ensuing, but the author likes to give away a little more of the plot throughout the second half of the book, through the thoughts of the protagonists--for my part, I figured out who and why by two thirds through, but I read a lot of mysteries. My one other comment is on the police officers--Detectives Rasbach and Jennings--Rasbach does all the thinking, all the questioning, and all the cop stuff. Jennings never asks questions but occasionally talks with his partner apart from those being questioned--they are supposed to be partners, but Rasbach seems to do all the investigating. This is the second Shari Lapena book I have read that has the same two detectives in it, and the standard is the same--Jennings is still the silent partner--but all in all, still a good read. This is the fourth book I have read by this author and while I have basically enjoyed them all, my favorite was the first one I read called "An Unwelcome Guest", I think was the title--I loved the atmosphere, the location, and the weather.
Crazy addictive! I dare you not to read this in one sitting, or try to go to sleep part way through... I absolutely devoured this book. It is super suspenseful, fast paced, and full of unreliable narrators. You are never really sure how much to trust any of the characters as you don't get to know them very deeply, that's what makes it such a guessing game. I very much enjoyed.
I enjoyed the suspense of this novel and could not put it down. It was full of lots of twists I didn't see coming.
Great mystery as it keeps you guessing through the entire story. I found the pace of the story to be somewhat slow, but as your near the end the plot quickens and that's when I was really able to become invested.
I gave it 3 stars because I kept turning the pages. But it was a very formulaic modern mystery crime novel
I have never read a Shari Lapena book before, but I can say that I was not disappointed. Her book, The Couple Next Door did not fail to keep me on edge. The book follows a family whose baby got kidnapped, and the police investigation that follows it. I personally enjoy these types of books, as I like the suspense. If you enjoy books filled with suspense and keep you wanting more, I would highly recommend reading this book. As a warning, this book does involve mental illness and could be triggering to some people, so if you easily get triggered by this, I would not recommend it. There were many times where something would happen that I did not expect, and was a great aspect to the book. The characters were well written and the plot was well thought out. Overall, the book was a good read and I would recommend. @mdawg of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library
I prefer books with 1st person narratives, so I do feel like the book being in 3rd person the whole time was a little boring. I feel like although the author did a good job describing the two main characters, it would've been more enjoyable to hear the story in their points of view. There were definitely some twists that kept the story interesting so I gave it three stars, but overall this wasn't my favorite.
I gave it 2 stars because I was able to finish the book. It was not my cup of tea; the story really never takes off, making it harder and harder for me to keep my eyes open while reading.
It seems to me, from others I have heard from, you either love it or hate it.
