Considered Teffi{u2019}s single greatest work, Memories: From Moscow to the Black Sea is a deeply personal account of the author{u2019}s last months in Russia and Ukraine, suffused with her acute awareness of the political currents churning around her, many of which have now resurfaced. In 1918, in the immediate aftermath of the Russian Revolution, Teffi, whose stories and journalism had made her a celebrity in Moscow, was invited to read from her work in Ukraine. She accepted the invitation eagerly, though she had every intention of returning home. As it happened, her trip ended four years later in Paris, where she would spend the rest of her life in exile.

Accidentally caught up in the Russian civil war, comic author Teffi was forced to flee one place after another until, in 1922, she ended up in Paris. This is her vivid and sometimes funny account of this dangerous period.

What a wonderful writer, what a wonderful travel adventure. FYI: there's a map at the END, rather than the usual start of the book, and while reading, would have loved to be able to follow Teffi's progress visually. (I love maps.) Set in the same era as "Dr. Zhivago", this is a much lighter story as our herroine manages to scamper ahead of constant impending war fronts. A page turner!

Really outstanding translation into English idiom, riveting stories of escaping Bolshevik Russia.
