"This is one hell of a good book. So many fantasies concentrate on the darkness in humanity these days. There's something to be said for that, if it's well done. Yet this is a book that reminds you that deep down, we want to have courage and honour - and we admire those who do. Hugely enjoyable throughout. 5 stars - well deserved."--Conn Iggulden The King is dead, the Greatcoats have been disbanded, andFalcio Val Mond and his fellow magistrates Kest and Brastihave been reduced to working as bodyguards. Things could beworse. Their employer could be lying dead on the floor while thekiller plants evidence framing them for the murder. Oh wait, that'sexactly what's happeningNow a royal conspiracy is about to unfold in the most corrupt cityin the world. A carefully orchestrated series of murders that beganwith the overthrow of an idealistic young king will end with the deathof an orphaned girl and the ruin of everything that Falcio, Kest, andBrasti have fought for. But if the trio want to foil the conspiracy, savethe girl, and reunite the Greatcoats, they'll have to do it with nothingbut the tattered coats on their backs and the swords in their hands, because these days every noble is a tyrant, every knight is a thug, and the only thing you can really trust is a traitor's blade.

Surprisingly fun. Full of adventure, humour, and a plan years in the making.

I read this on the recommendation of a friend, having sat beside her during lunch and listened as she laughed, exclaimed and made other interesting noises while reading the entire series. I am sure I made several of the same noises while reading this one.
Kinda like three musketeers, but kinda like pirates the three main characters were loyal to the king, traveling around the country to see his laws were enforces and settling disputes between all people. But that was five years ago, before the Dukes decided they didn't like the King enforcing the laws and killed him. Now each Duke/ Duchess rules their land like a mini kingdom and the Greatcoats are hated by all.
Our main character holds the group together, he is the planner and leader-Until he finds a situation that can only end in their death and won't leave-keeping one young girl alive during a time when no laws are enforced (kinda like the movie 'the purge'). Thus start the plots that will continue through the rest of the series.

This book is a swashbuckling, magical, and humorous adventure! Plot twists and turns were fun though sometimes predictable. I particularly like the diverse roles for females in this story!!
