This was not as good as I was hoping, the recipes are good but pretty standard for this type of food. Some facts on the pre invasion diet but nothing like "My Grandmother's Garden" which gives an North American view.

This book is fantastic! It's not only a great book of recipes, but a treatise on returning to the ways and wisdom of Mesoamerican indigenous people. I've tested over 10 recipes so far and all are really tasty. Indulge your inner revolutionary and check this great book out!

I just prepared the "Kick-Ass Chayote Salad With Pickled Red Onions" recipe from this book for a work potluck, and it's outstanding. Wow...I am soooo looking forward to making more dishes out of this beautiful cookbook!

I love this book. It totally reminds me of Bryant Terry's work, who actually wrote the foreword in this book,

and how he uses food to tell stories of the African diaspora even if it is sometimes painful. I love learning about people and culture through food. It gives you a chance to see all the things we have in common and that are different all at the same time. and it tastes good too.

This book is full of awesome stories and really good recipes. I made the old school pinto beans and they were great. I also like how many recipes feature nopales. nopalitos are really good and they actually regulate blood sugar levels. I love the wisdom in that.

you see this all over in indigenous cultures. a population might a genetic disposition towards unstable blood sugar, but they also have the cure in the food they eat. Yams in West African food help with sickle cell, (which it self is a thrifty gene hold over for malaria)

Its wonderful to know your own culture which many of us have been taught to be ashamed of actually has the answers to many of modern issues, not just health alone.
