Turtledove deftly weaves a tale of baseball -- barnstorming through the west during the Great Drepression -- along with urban fantasy (vampires, zombies, werewolves, conjurers, and other magic).

He shows us the ubiquity of semi-pro baseball in this era, adds a hefty dash of social commentary, and immerses us in what a 1930's America might have been like with an added foundation of magic.

Highly recommended.
