"The New York Times bestselling author of Labor Day and After Her returns with a poignant story about the true meaning--and the true price--of friendship. Drinking cost Helen her marriage and custody of her seven-year-old son, Ollie. Once an aspiring art photographer, she now makes ends meet taking portraits of school children and working for a caterer. Recovering from her addiction, she spends lonely evenings checking out profiles on an online dating site. Weekend visits with her son are awkward. He's drifting away from her, fast. When she meets Ava and Swift Havilland, the vulnerable Helen is instantly enchanted. Wealthy, connected philanthropists, they have their own charity devoted to rescuing dogs. Their home is filled with fabulous friends, edgy art, and dazzling parties. Then Helen meets Elliott, a kind, quiet accountant who offers loyalty and love with none of her newfound friends' fireworks. To Swift and Ava, he's boring. But even worse than that, he's unimpressed by them. As Helen increasingly falls under the Havillands' influence--running errands, doing random chores, questioning her relationship with Elliott--Ava and Swift hold out the most seductive gift: their influence and help to regain custody of her son. But the debt Helen owes them is about to come due. Ollie witnesses an accident involving Swift, his grown son, and the daughter of the Havillands' housekeeper. With her young son's future in the balance, Helen must choose between the truth and the friends who have given her everything"--

I skimmed a lot of this book. I guess it held my attention to the point I stayed with it to see what the great betrayal would be. The facts of the betrayal were not entirely predictable mostly because I expected it to be even worse and premeditated. Also, why would she think these people were wonderful and generous. The daughter of their (almost) lifelong housekeeper was struggling to pay for college. Her mother was anxious for her to become a doctor. The girl was smart and hardworking. According to their lifestyle, it would have been a drop in the bucket for them to put her through college. Wouldn't you be surprised they didn't.

From the beginning of this novel it has a tone of disaster waiting to happen........it's a story of friendship, love, loss and betrayal---and the lengths one will go to be accepted and approved of...."Love doesn't come and go when it's real. Love is supposed to be constant." EXCELLENT!!!!

I've been eyeballing this book on the shelves of my library since May, probably, and finally picked it up this month. Could. Not. Stop. Reading. Real life got in the way of me finishing this in one gulp, but it was still like running downhill at dusk. I couldn't wait to find out what horrible thing I felt in my BONES was going to happen at the bottom of that hill. Immerse yourself in the story of Sven Gali-like rich couple, the Havilands, and a down-on-her-luck recovering drunk, Helen, who's recently lost custody of her young son.

I was pleasantly surprised by Maynard's ability to suck me into this seemingly plain old story. Outstanding. Can't wait to read more from her.

This is an outstanding novel. I read it in one sitting, staying awake until 2:00 a.m. because I couldn't bear to stop reading.
