A gentle, simple story about the trials of being an adopted child. Its message is sweet yet realistic -- things won't always go well, but love and perseverance over time will set it right in the end. A great read for a unit on different kinds of families.

It’s always such a nice, warm-and-fuzzy feeling to come across a new picture book like this one that’s sweet, well-written, engaging, and that you can tell immediately is going to resonate deeply with many of its readers. This is the story of a son and his new adoptive mother, who he’s not quite sure how he fits in with – after all, she’s a cat with stripes, and he’s a dog with no stripes. They don’t look anything alike, and seem not to have much common ground. However, through a series of everyday activities (taking a bath, making cookies, getting ready for bed), they both begin to adjust to their new family together, and while the process is not without bumps, it becomes clear that it's not whether or not you look alike or are related by blood that makes you a family -- it's when you love and care for each other. This is a great choice for everyone, particularly foster and adoptive families, but we can all identify with the idea that love is what makes a family above all else.
