I was a senior in high school when "Rebel" was released and James Dean became for me and my friends an emblematic icon of a defiant and insubordinate teenager. I had seen "East of Eden" and thought his explosive performance as the bad brother was absolutely riveting.
This movie was a joy to watch because it shows a private side of James Dean who has been distorted by gossip and myth. The actors are true to the time, the music is wonderful.

I checked out this movie because of all the great reviews of this movie but I could not get past the lead actors "acting" as James Dean. I never met James Dean but I am sure James was more personable and spoke more enthusiastically than that. The title should have been "Lifeless."

I really enjoyed this film. Before watching it I recommend you flip through "James Dean Fifty Years Ago" by Dennis Stock. It's a collection of photographs of James Dean by Dennis Stock (also available at this library!). This film tells the story behind those photos.

The actor who portrays James Dean (Dane DeHaan) and the make-up/wardrobe department do a fantastic job bringing James Dean back to life on screen. Obviously there are some differences, (it's not really James Dean!), but he's very close. Visually spot on at times. The sets/special effects to make this film appear like the 1950s is great too. Time Square in NYC appears just like it did in that famous rainy photo. It's hard to no how authentic everything is as far as events and conversations that took place, but it was entertaining for me to watch none the less.

What if James Dean were an effeminate bisexual? What if we made a film using the visual style of and the dance scene from Pulp Fiction? What if we could get a young actor who could do a Donnie Wahlberg impression?

A bit on the slow side but an interesting look at the life of James Dean just before he hit it big in Hollywood but trying to avoid being engulfed by the celebrity machine and photographer Dennis Stock who sees something in this young actor. Probably be of more interest to people who like TCM channel and have an interest in classic Hollywood lore.
