Brokaw on Brokaw. In this powerful memoir of a year of dramatic change, the bestselling author and former NBC anchorman chronicles a year spent battling cancer and reflecting on his long, lucky life. Tom Brokaw has led a lucky life, with a strong marriage and family, many friends, a brilliant journalism career culminating in his twenty-two years as anchor of the NBC Nightly News, and author of The Greatest Generation and other books. But in the summer of 2013, when nagging back pain led him to consult with the doctors at the Mayo Clinic, his run of good fortune was interrupted. There he received the shocking news that he had multiple myeloma, a treatable but incurable blood cancer. Friends had always referred to Brokaw's "lucky star," but as he writes in this inspiring memoir, "Turns out that star has a dimmer switch."Brokaw takes us through all the seasons and stages of this surprising year, the emotions, discoveries, setbacks, and...

Very well written - hope he recovers

Even the best life can become fraught with challenges; and this is what happened to Tom Brockaw. Brockaw had the perfect life, strong marriage, great children and grandchildren. Nothing could be better till he heard the dreadful pronouncement - you have multiple melanoma. Yes, cancer can change any life dramatically. Brockaw talks candidly about his battle and his roller coaster emotions. Given his background as a broadcaster, the memoir is interspersed with narrative and editorializing of events and issues like 9/11 and the health care plan. All this makes for excellent reading. It is above all a memoir of hope.

loved this book. Two great quotes: Trust but verify. Brokaw recommends this while seeking medical care.

Warren Buffets friend's statement: I want to know where I will die so that I never go there.

Battling any disease or serious health problem is a fascinating story since we will all have that experience in our lives.
As a national news anchor, Tom has been all over the planet and met many "historical" people. So, a lot of bragging and name-dropping here. (He's a likeable guy, so it's allowed.)
I didn't appreciate his comment about poor, sick people making poor choices. The poor can not afford to eat organic food, hike in scenic woods, use expensive gym equipment or go to top physicians.
A very readable book.

Really sad that "StarGladiator" feels that way. Brokaw brought us the story of The Greatest Generation, the brave men and women who fought in World War II and those who kept the home fires burning.
And having a sister who died of the same disease, multiple myeloma, about four years ago, I can assure you that this is a hellish, excruciatingly painful, and particularly pernicious cancer. Brokaw doesn't need the money or the PR from this book. He wanted to share his story. Just about everyone has been touched by cancer, directly or not, so it's generous of him to share his experience.

[In response to commenter, aracheir: The so-called Greatest Generation, who fought the Third Reich, at least partially financed by the richest families of America and Europe - - see congressional investigations circa 1940s - - allowed the coup of 1963 to take place, with the followup murders of at least Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Sen. Bobby Kennedy [and probably many others] with zero consequences! Brokaw and those before him never reported the news, they simply followed the script, and took in the extras, especially gratuities, from their wealth benefactors to just read those teleprompters!]
So, what a grand fellow, according to his PR people, his backgrounders, his fans, but unfortunately, I cannot recall ever learning any real news, any real truthful content, from this fellow.
