The first half of the book is a little confusing because of the composition of the narrative: from different persons in different epochs. From the second half it becomes clearer and more interesting. A book about the underground resistance of representatives of the German intelligentsia in the period preceding the Second World War, when Hitler and his party gradually came to power in Germany. The efforts of people who are against Hitler's policy, to warn the world about the impending catastrophe. The struggle is interspersed with love, loyalty, betrayal, jealousy, dedication to the cause, and how differentially each of characters behaves in different situations and perceives what is happening.

It's not often I don't finish a book, but this was one occasion. The characters just didn't grab me. Last I read they were in a nightclub and I thought I don't really care what happens next and so I closed the book and left them there.

Incredibly interesting historical novel, though it takes a little work to follow the story; I had to go back and re-read sections. The style is personal, nuanced, & there is a sense of great immediacy. Based on real characters and events, this novel sheds light on the German socialists’—Jewish and non-Jewish—efforts to stop the Hitlerites and the consequences of their failure. Especially intriguing is the reaction of the English government to the plight of their German refugees. Looking forward to more novels by this author.

This is a talented writer. But you have to like reading a story where the plot is told from different point of views. And in this case the author didn't try to make the characters very likable. But I found it very interesting.

If you're interested in anything to do with WWII or the Nazis then this is a book you should read. Written by a good friend of the one of the main characters; Ruth. This is a true story of some of the Germans who worked against the Nazis and Hitler, from outside of Germany as well as from within. I didn't know, and was surprised to learn, that the British government bent under the pressure from the Nazis that exiled Germans were not allowed to publish anything, they were constantly surveilled, followed, and any activities kept track of by German spies. Most of what I've read previously has focussed on the actual war or life in Germany, not the life of Germans in England during the war. So this was a new part of the story for me. Plus, great first book from an Australian writer, which makes it that much better.

The first chapter started off well enough, but then the book kept switching back and forth between the 2000s and the 1930s, not just between chapters, but with flashbacks in each chapter. I just wanted to see the past part of the story, though neither past nor present, or the people in either, really kept my interest.
