Add a CommentThis novel talks about a lot of comparisons between humans and elephants and how similar and different we are from them. Picoult uses this idea to relate to what the main character is going through. This book is about a young girl who can't really take in she has been abandoned by her mother. The emotions in this book are surrounded through sadness and confusion. I'm a huge fan of Jodi Picoult but this topic was very different than the other topics she includes in her other novels which may be the reason why I'm not a huge fan of the book. If you understand elephants and love them so much- get the novel but if you're not crazy about them I advise not to get it. Rate: 3/5.

I can’t recommend this book enough! I was in tears by the end. So beautifully written, and the ending is just jaw dropping. I can’t wait to read her other books.
Such a beautiful story that unravels at a perfect pace. This story had so many hidden meanings that brought me to tears at the end.
An engaging story line, plus the added bonus (for me) of having all sorts of interesting elephant tales (pun intended) interwoven, since the main character is a scientist studying elephant behaviour. A great read.
The first half of this book is mostly slow-moving, backstory. The ending is when things get really dynamic.
I was disappointed in this story by Picoult. I love her books but this one was just ok for me.
Could be jut the mood I was in when I read it as I believe most loved it.
...well, I didn't see that coming.

Great book to read, learn so much about elephants lives their personalities, ending of the book is shocking. Keep reading.
A hard book for me to rate - until the last 25 pages or so, I was considering giving a 5 star. This book had me on the edge of my seat wondering if they would find Alice dead or alive, I was totally unable to predict who'd killed Nevvie, I loved the characters and found them all to be real and believable (even Serenity, the psychic and definitely Jenna), and I super-loved the information about the elephants! So,I was considering a 5 star for a Jodi Picoult book... quite a change because in the two books of hers that I read previously, I found her predictable (and in my opinion, contrived) twist at the end disappointing. So... SPOILER ALERT........ do not read further if you haven't finished.
I can't believe I did not see it coming this time? I was completely gob-smacked and deflated at the ending and feel cheated... since I felt that this book was so well written and captivating, I totally forgot that Picault always likes to have these crazy sucker-punch endings so I was sucker-punched and didn't like it.... seriously, having it turn out that most of the characters are ghosts makes the book, in my opinion, just a take-off of the movie Sixth Sense... a very contrived ending just to make an impact. If it wasn't that I found the book, right up until the ending, worthy of a 4.5 or more, I would have given this book a 1 star.
