#1 New York Times bestselling author Kathy Reichs returns with her sixteenth riveting novel featuring forensic anthropologist Tempe Brennan, whose examination of a young girl killed in a hit and run in North Carolina triggers an investigation into international human trafficking.

When Charlotte police discover the body of a teenage girl along a desolate stretch of two-lane highway, Temperance Brennan fears the worst. The girl's body shows signs of foul play. Inside her purse police find the ID card of a prominent local businessman, John-Henry Story, who died in a horrific flea market fire months earlier. Was the girl an illegal immigrant turning tricks? Was she murdered?

The medical examiner has also asked Tempe to examine a bundle of Peruvian dog mummies confiscated by U.S. Customs. A Desert Storm veteran named Dominick Rockett stands accused of smuggling the objects into the country. Could there be some connection between the trafficking of antiquitiesand the trafficking of humans?

As the case deepens, Tempe must also grapple with personal turmoil. Her daughter Katy, grieving the death of her boyfriend in Afghanistan, impulsively enlists in the Army. As pressure mounts from all corners, Tempe soon finds herself at the center of a conspiracy that extends all the way from South America, to Afghanistan, and right to the center of Charlotte. "A genius at building suspense" ( Daily News , New York), Kathy Reichs is at her brilliant best in this thrilling novel.

A good read that moved along with a lot of fast paced action. Deciphering or reading the explanation of the acronyms slowed it a little.

The usual good fare from Reichs involving Temperance. A good read.

When I started reading this, I didn't think I would enjoy it but it turned out to be pretty good. Fast paced, interesting characters. Brought in the subject of human trafficking that is a real problem world-wide.

Wasn't a huge fan of this book. The plot was meh and I too found that there was A LOT of military terms that I didn't really care to read or learn about.

I found this book poor in comparison to her earlier novels. I felt she was trying to make a plot from too many amazing coincidences, using police & military jargon in a less than convincing way, lecturing on forensic points rather than working them naturally into the story, and lastly the love triangle parts about Ryan and Pete felt like awkward last minute add-ons & did not add to the story.

An average read at best. Far too much military jargon. This series is getting stale and the "love triangle" is getting very boring.

Another excellent title in the Temperance Brennan series. I never get tired of reading this series--Kathy Reichs always researches her subject matter so well and chooses contemporary themes. This storyline deals with human trafficking and certainly educated me on this issue.

Kathy Reichs's latest novel about Temperance Brennan is a good one. I thought there was less "lecturing" than usual which was great. Her last couple of novels are more action-packed. There's still science but not so much and not so dry. Maybe she has accepted that her loyal readers have learned a bit about what she does. This one has some interesting stuff about the US military in Afghanistan and nicely pulls together all the cases Tempe is juggling.

I found Bones of the Lost a terrific read and it throws a light on human trafficking, especially young women. Reichs is not the best writer in the world and sometimes the cliff-hangers at the end of a chapter are almost cartoonish, but she writes with passion, she knows her stuff, and it moves along very quickly. Most of all, I learn something new with every book.
