Cop Town is a standalone novel which was a 2015 Edgar Nominee; losing to Stephen King. Set in 1974 Cop Town follows the first few days of a female recruit on the Atlanta police force. She is resented by both the men and women on the force at a time when someone is killing Atlanta policemen. Women are new on the force which has been integrated racially; at least partially. The story is told in the third person from three points of view; the recruit’s, another female cop’s, and the killer’s. The result is mediocre and not worthy of an Edgar nomination. I had several problems with this novel. First, I find it hard to believe that so many male cops could be so rotten to the women. Men were expected to be gentlemen in those days, especially in the Deep South. There are always jerks but they are never the majority. Second, the mystery itself is resolved without sufficient clues to figure it out. The killer could have been several characters introduced. Third, the amount of drinking on the job by some of the cops is hard to believe including one obviously drunk character in the squad room. On a positive note I did get to appreciate the difficulties that some women faced entering the work force at that time and particularly the police force. The story was told well with decent character development. However, Cop Town was much overrated to get an Edgar nod.
