George Stevens' insidiously framed indictment of racism. Calmy, quietly we get roped and round-up into the fun and games of being a Benedict. So, you think it's about Dean trying to get into Elizabeth's chinos. Partly.

Two very different movies in one: score '10' for the first half; it has all the interesting characters and incidents The second half is a tedious melodrama and scores a '2,'
and there all the positive due to the sequence "Angel Obregón's Funeral."

Hollywood makes very few films like this any more: A-list stars, expensive production values, serious themes. . . . Director George Stevens had been profoundly affected by his experience photographing the Nazi death camps.

Rock Hudson is good to look at, but seldom conveys the gravity of a man convinced that the old ways are best and that change means decline.

Elizabeth Taylor was 23 at the time and the camera captures her extraordinary beauty.

James Dean will be a disappointment to many. His style of acting now seems mannered and fussy.

The photography is very good, conveying the immense scale of West Texas as well as the intimate personal dramas.

A really, really loooong movie (3 1/2 hours!) I've been having a James Dean retrospective (he only made three movies!) and he was excellent in this film. Rock Hudson was also great (I usually think of him acting in Doris Day movies) and Elizabeth Taylor also very good. Not really sure what the message was meant to be when it was made in the 1950s. Watching today, it covers sexism (you're my wife, shut up and do as I say even though I know you are intelligent). Racism, most of the Mexican-Americans are referred to as wetbacks and are only servants even though some of them were eventually family members in the movie. Class-ism - rich v. poor, born with money v. self made. So, it covers a lot a subjects, makes you wonder if it would have played better a multi-part miniseries or if it should have been edited down to make the story tighter, but like most things in Texas it is GIANT.

I recommend this DVD. Giant is a classical 1950's movie. The attitudes of the characters reflect the 1940-1950's society attitudes and approach to life. The story is strong. It is not too violent for children to watch. It is slow moving. It represents how the rich get rich by stepping on the poor. The rich in the plot have little respect or regard for the poor or servants. They treat them less than human. They justify this by calling it tradition to follow. They are insecure and feel inferior. They look for continuous external confirmation to being superior by being abusing others. They create an invisible caste system. I was appalled how people were treated. This movie has that moral lesson in the story. The actors did a great job.

This is a very beautiful film with what has to be one of the most beautiful casts of all time, but it is just too long! However, I do wonder if it would be different if I watched in the theatre for 3 hours straight instead of the interruption of switching the disc over. This is my mother's all time favourite movie but I just can't feel the same. Also, the copy from the hpl is in horrible condition! It doesn't make for smooth viewing.

Amusing to watch the camera work around for height differences. Rock Hudson was 6'4" while Elizabeth Taylor was 5'3."

Kind of long - but good fun.
no doubt better on the big screen. The historical Texas oil/agrarian economic change backdrop was interesting.

Now I've finished my James Dean watch. Great actor!

And It was interesting to see how they added dyed grey hair with blue tinge to age the actors.

Also fun to see Sal Mineo in his cameo as a "wetback".

The best picture you will ever see with Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean. Director George Stevens backed them up with such fine character actors as Carroll Baker, Chill Wills, Dennis Hopper, Sal Mineo, Rod Taylor and Earl Holliman. The story comes from Edna Ferber's great novel "Giant". Director George Stevens only worked with the best cinematographers and in the case of "Giant" it was William Mellor. You feel the size of Texas through his camera lens. You feel the love of Elizabeth Taylor or the jealousy of James Dean through his lens. "Giant" defines the term "Epic Movie". It runs 201 minutes and it seems to fly on by. The movie just couldn't be any better. You won't regret checking "Giant" out from the KCLS.!
