More than 40 years after breaking up, the Beatles remain the biggest-selling and most influential group in the history of popular music. Fans endlessly replay their songs, craving more, while thousands of cover versions of their songs have been recorded or performed by artists. Band biographies, pop music histories, song books, and academic titles clutter shelves on the Fab Four. But never has there been a definitive guide to the finest songs of The Beatles after they called it quits. Still the Greatest is a love song to the songwriting and recording achievements of Paul, John, George, and Ringo after each struck out on his own. In this creative history, Jackson selects the best songs by the each in his solo career and organizes them into fantasy albums they might have formed had they stuck it out. This romp through the post-Beatle history of each artist delves into the circumstances behind the composition, recording, and reception of each work, offering a refreshing take on how spectacular much of the Beatles{u2019} second act truly is. Jackson assesses the over 70 albums and 900 songs they collectively released, selecting the crème de la crème of their output. Still the Greatest brims with facts (release dates, writing and performing credits, and information about production techniques) and insightful analyses of the music and lyrics. In telling the stories behind the songs, Jackson recounts the remarkable influence the Post Fab Four continued to have long after the big split. Both a handy reference and an engrossing cover-to-cover read, Still the Greatest is an invaluable companion for those who thought it all ended with their 1970 album Let It Be.

this author is an even bigger, and better, Beatles fan than I am. " Unlike FREE AS A BIRD, REAL LOVE was more or less complete as a demo, so the other three functioned primarily as Lennon's sidemen." "Cowritten with Tom Petty, the title was a phrase of Olivia's. When George would get too worked up, she'd chide him, 'Okay, cheer down, big fella.' it was produced in 1989 as a nonalbum single to promote LETHAL WEAPON 2." "The saucy horns match the single-mindedness of a horny boy pursuing a snooty girl with a hole in her heart, both of them isolated by their predetermined roles in the endless game." "When we get out of the mind-sets of sex and materialism, we're all bursting with a love and joy that is connected to everyone, with a feeling that's almost too intense to be understood or expressed." "Soon the Walrus from MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR is playing bass while Starr plays drums. In the end, Harrison levitates and sprouts eight arms waving like a Hindu god. At one point, a passerby carries the IMAGINE album to represent Lennon. Other walk-ons include Elton, Simon, Derek Taylor, Jeff Lynne, Gary Wright, Ray Cooper, and Neil Aspinall...it was George's last top 40 hit in the U.S." " Next up are Dylan and Petty, singing together. Petty's reedy voice could sound like a stronger, more normal version of Dylan's, and the contrast makes Dylan's voice sound fleshed-out, rough-hewn, and nasal, audibly grinning at the camaraderie as everyone joins in. Orbison and Lynne take their shot at the bridge, tharn Harrison's slide guitar duets with Dylan's inimitable harmonica, wailing like it did 27 years earlier during his first professional gig, as a session man on Belafonte's MIDNIGHT SPECIAL." "The day after Pang and Lennon got together, he decided to write a song about her in the vein of the Diamonds' classic LITTLE DARLIN'. He celebrates her radiant youth, their wonderful sex, and how she helps him get through his lonely, pained existence." "The opposite of the paranoid, manipulative Ono, Pang was excited by the idea of John and Paul working together again, and encouraged him to reconnect with his long-ignored son, Julian. " "When Paul started bagging on the group on RAM, Ringo finally joined John and George in bitching about Paul on vinyl. he calls him a meathead, tells him to quit pretending that he is dead, and urges him to finally put out some decent music." "BACK OFF BUGALOO remains a highlight of Ringo's live act and has been appropriated by Warrant for their hit, CHERRY PIE, and by Franz Ferdinand for TAKE ME OUT." "' Dear Paul, We thought a lot about yours and the Beatles LPs--and decided it's stupid for Apple to put out two big albums within 7 days of each other also there's Starr's and Hey Jude)--so we sent a letter to EMI telling them to hold your release date till June 4th (there's a big Apple convention in Hawaii then). We thought you'd come around when you realized that the Beatles album was coming out on April 24th. We're sorry it turned out like this--it's nothing personal. Love John and George. Hare Krishna. A Mantra a day keeps MAYA! Away.'" " When Starr told him he thought the plan made sense, McCartney 'went crazy; he was crazy, I thought,' Starr said in the court case later. ' He just shouted and pointed at me. He was out of control, prodding his finger toward my face. He told me to get my coat on and get out. I couldn't believe it was happening to me.'" "With ISN'T IT A PITY, Harrison goes toe- to -toe with the tune McCartney wouldn't let him embellish( HEY JUDE)." rick Nielsen, guitarist for Cheap Trick, regrets not having gotten a photo with Lennon when he played with him on the DOUBLE FANTASY sessions. Nielsen gave him guitars, but there wasn't a photo taken with Lennon. I found one mistake in this book: he states that ringo had not played on a paul album until much later than when he did. Ringo even appeared in the film GIVE MY REGARDS TTO BROAD STREET
