When cardboard creatures come magically to life, a boy must save his town from disaster.

After Cam's down-and-out father gives him a cardboard box for his birthday, they fashion it into a man and it comes magically to life. But things spin wildly out of control when the neighborhood bully, Marcus, steals a scrap of the cardboard to create creatures that promptly disobey his orders and multiply into an unruly army.

Before long, Cam and Marcus must put their differences behind them and work together to prevent a legion of cardboard monsters from taking over the whole town!

Wonderfully inventive in storyline and visual style, Mr. TenNapel has created a very different variation on the Galatea theme.

The comic explores notions of kindness, reward, punishments, love, life and death and the answers aren’t always easy ones. To a young boy like Cam, the answers always seem simple: kindness first. But that turns out to be a terrible mistake as his decency is taken advantage of by someone sly, cruel and nasty, the mean-spirited poor-little-rich-boy Marcus, whose apparent greed and inherent spitefulness are a cover for unexpected psychological wounds.

In a welcome difference to such stories, Cam isn’t left to shoulder the burden of rectifying his error alone; his father comes along for the ride. So many fantasy stories devolve to having the children taking care of business while their clueless parents are left behind, lied to or deceived because of the jejeune attitude that “parents just don’t understand”. With Cam’s mother gone, his father is his rock and stay and Cam wouldn’t dream of hiding something as important as a cardboard man come to life.

The primary story deals with the animation of said cardboard man named Bill and all that follows it and it thrills and delights with unexpected surprises, grim twists and awful turns. There are rules to using the cardboard (there are always rules with these kind of things) and it’s the inevitable breaking of them that results in the chaos.

Mike and Cam’s adventures with the magical cardboard and what ensues make this a graphic novel to read and re-read just to catch all the little details. Kudos to Mr. TenNapel for creating an unforgettable story with astonishing imagery to accompany its text.

There's that familiar anecdote: a child gets a nice, big, expensive toy for his birthday. The parents have spent hours putting it together,. For all of their sweat, pain, and suffering they find that the child is most fascinated with the big cardboard box the toy came in.
