Although the premise of this book is great, and the cover very enticing, the recipes do not live up to the book's name. Part one of the book is called, "A Rough Guide to Ethical Eating," and nicely covers issues such as eating seasonally, healthfully, fair trade, locally, organic, vegetarian/vegan, and "whole food." It even covers Freeganism. However, the recipes go on to include chicken chorizo, pork ribs, rib eye steaks, etc. It is well-known (the United Nations themselves have studied it) that eating animal products (especially red meat) creates greenhouse gases (more than all transportation in the world), pollution, deforestation, mono-cropping GMOs, and endangers natural wildlife (not to mention the health of those who ingest it!). Eating meat is NOT green and I was disappointed in this cookbook for that point alone. In addition, the British wording (courgette, larder, tins) as well as metric measurements will make this a difficult book for teens in our library to follow. On a positive note, the photos of real teens with their own recipes are a real stand-out. A wide array of races, ages, and styles makes it really appealing. I hope that someone takes the time to make some of the meat-free options in this book and can offer a better rating!
