Trying to broaden my reading experiences this is the second book by Maxwell. I'm not sure exactly when he wrote this, but guessing it might have been mid-1950 I'd surmise he had been to Europe in 1948 while all of Europe was far from recovery of the war. First starting out with the details of all the luggage (supplies) I nearly laughed out loud remembering my first experience with rail stations & the cumbersome methods getting from one point to another. This is a feature guidebooks never mention even decades into the present. This couple did very well trying to fit in & accepting the rudiments available - none of this 'at home we have...'.

I think it would be beneficial, when reading this, to have a more favorable interest or connection to the country, it's people, culture, food. Skim reading became the norm since I have zip interest in France, except possibly the resolve of the Resistance, Edith Piaf, or the wild horses, not even the food appeals to me. My only other related read was Peter Mahle sp? A Year in Provence, which of thoroughly enjoyed.
