Not one of Mankell's Scandinvian thrillers, but a story about a Swede who finds himself farming in the heart of Zimbabwe just when whites are starting to be forced off the land. A bit talky - some of the descriptions, especially in the first part could be edited - but still an interesting read.

I am surprised at the high marks given by other readers of this book! While some parts were intriguing being set in Africa, I found the book underwhelming as a whole! I really enjoyed the Swedish Wallenberg movie series! Yet, this book was rather disappointing! The story is not bad, fascinating at time, yet somewhat dark and depressing!

excellent. thought-provoking. people of different beliefs, upbringing, countries, race cannot fully understand one another's mental processes.

Hans Olafsson escapes a childhood marked by abandonment and loss in a backwoods Swedish village to glaringly hot Zambia hoping, by fulfilling a friend’s dream, to find some purpose and direction in his own life. Instead, he slowly discovers a bewildering and frightening world where hatred for the rich white man is hidden by a thin veneer.
