On the runway of life, Tim Gunn is the perfect life coach.

You've watched him mentor talented designers on the hit television show Project Runway . Now the inimitable Tim Gunn shares his personal secrets for "making it work"--in your career, relationships, and life. Filled with delightfully dishy stories of fashion's greatest divas, behind-the-scenes glimpses of Runway 's biggest drama queens, and never-before-revealed insights into Tim's private life, Gunn's Golden Rules is like no other how-to book you've ever read.

In the world according to Tim, there are no shortcuts to success. Hard work, creativity, and skill are just the beginning. By following eighteen tried-and-true principles, you can apply Tim's rules to anything you set your mind to. You'll learn why Tim frowns on displays of bad behavior, like the vitriolic outburst by Martha Stewart's daughter about her mother's name-brand merchandise. You'll discover the downfalls of divadom as he describes Vogue 's Andr#65533; Leon Talley being hand-fed grapes and Anna Wintour being carried downstairs by her bodyguards. And you'll get Tim's view on the backstabbing by one designer on Project Runway and how it brilliantly backfired.

Then there are his down-to-earth guidelines for making life better--for yourself and others--in small and large ways, especially in an age that favors comfort over politeness, ease over style. Texting at the dinner table? Wearing shorts to the theater? Not in Tim's book. Living a well-mannered life of integrity and character is hard work, he admits, but the rewards are many: being a good friend, being glamorous and attractive, and being a success-- much like Tim himself!

He is never one to mince words. But Tim Gunn is always warm, witty, wise, and wonderfully supportive-- just the mentor you need to design a happy, creative, and fulfilling life that will never go out of style.

I love this book-have read it twice. Tim Gunn is full of common sense and the stories are entertaining. I'm sure I'll read it again:)

Sorry, but I love Tim Gunn! The fact that I agree with all his advice made it easy to read. The saddest thing is people who really NEED to hear what he has to say don't think they do. Oh well, carry on!

I never watched Project Runaway, but I am considering it now, just to see who Tim Gunn is. I had picked this book up just by curiosity and actually it is a very funny and pleasing book. You have to be a bit accustomed with the fashion world to really enjoy all of his stories, but even without that you can get some warm feelings inside after reading it.

I picked this book up on a whim (it was next to the book I was actually looking for on the shelf) and ended up reading it all in one sitting. I haven’t seen Project Runway since it’s first season, and I don’t really follow fashion, so I was pleasantly surprised to find that my enjoyment of the book wasn’t contingent upon knowledge of the show or the industry.
Tim Gunn started his career as an educator, and this book seems to stem directly from his desire to continue to educate. The book is part memoir and part life philosophy manifesto. It’s full of enough quirky anecdotes to make it interesting without being too preachy, and I think it’s successful at providing some useful tips for navigating your way through social situations with grace and good humor. For example, Gunn emphasizes maintaining honesty and integrity, but when it comes to giving advice or offering criticism, he recognizes that it’s not always appropriate to do so. In these instances:
“If you want to stay friends with people who put themselves out in this way, it’s often necessary to deliver vague praise that doesn’t actually address the specifics of the production. Examples include: ‘Congratulations!’ or ‘That was quite a performance!’ or ‘I’ll never forget that!’ or the classic: ‘Oh, you!’”
-Gunn’s Golden Rules, p.180
This is sage advice, if you ask me, and it’s refreshing to hear it from someone who makes his living essentially giving advice. Thanks for the honesty, Tim Gunn.

This is a very sweet book to read. It is like you are having a conversation with Tim (like he says in the introduction). He has had such an interesting life, and he has really great stories about the fashion industry. Make it work!

I love Tim Gunn. LOVE HIM. But I did not love him in this book. This volume purports to be his rules to living. One of them is to be honest, but not to name names. Yet Tim does name names in this book repeatedly. Saying lovely things about someone and then nasty things later. Even when he tries to be discrete, he hints so heavily that you can figure out who he is talking about. There are also points that this book meanders off course, leaving readers wondering how this story is linked to the golden rule Tim is trying to teach you about.

If you want bitchy tell alls, this is your book. Otherwise, skip it and re-read Tim's first book
