This was an interesting and twisted film about that leaves one double guessing one's own opinions and assumptions. It starts off about a missing woman whose disappearance is being investigated, and ends with the investigator being mad and going to be lobotomized. Whether reality is in the perceiver or in the social agreed upon reality, is the main crux of the film.

Scorsese gets Leonardo di Caprio to play a 1940's film noir detective involved in an implausibly convoluted plot. Even if you don't completely comprehend, you enjoy the journey. OK so I am admitting that this film was beyond my pay level. I suspect that I will watch it again in the near future to more fully follow the clues hidden everywhere.

It would be more believable if they were reporters or medical students. Federal agents would not have put up with such treatment; they would have taken over the island from the get go.

This seems to be a current plot trend (Sorry! Spoiler Alert!). You're following the protagonist along (from their POV) but later you discover this is all the protagonist's delusion who you find out (in the end) is schizophrenic. "Franklyn", "Klimt", "A Beautiful Mind" and "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" (the last one was made a long time ago, so is not the latest plot trend). M. Night Shiyamalan had a slightly different twist by making the supporting actor be dead and everything was seen because the protagonist had a sixth sense (can see dead people). Can we bury this plot vehicle now? You can see it coming now so its no longer a shocker when the truth is revealed. The rest of the movie is just a gloomy detective story.

I'm kind of torn on this one. On one hand, I was angry about the ultimate plot direction, but that last line makes it almost kind of brilliant. I had mixed feelings on DiCaprio's performance, but he isn't awful here, just a few awkward line deliveries. The suspense is strong, though, and the atmosphere intense from the beginning. A revisit might make me like it more, but who knows?

Interested but not the best movie!

This film tried really hard to be great - and it has a few moments - but it, overall, disappoints.

Bummer, 137 minutes too long. I am not a Scorsese fan. Certainly did not help DiCaprio's career. Lots of fast forwards did not help.

Took the bait and watched this on Netflix before it was removed. Watched this in the cinema back in March 2010 when it was playing. After re-watching this again, it's almost felt like a new movie, but its way too convoluted and disturbing and was surprised to find myself watching this again and getting hooked into the story. Ben Kingsley's portrayal of Dr. John Cawley was totally spell-binding. The theme of the movie is very interesting. After all, you just never know what your government is doing behind closed doors.
