Former Marine and CIA agent Jack Morgan inherits his father's renowned security and detective business--along with a case load that tests him to the breaking point. Getting to the bottom of an NFL gambling scandal and an unsolved LAPD investigation into 18 school girl slayings would be enough. On top of all that, Morgan takes on solving the horrific murder of his best friend's wife.
As Morgan fights the urge to exact brutal revenge on that killer, he has to navigate a workplace imbroglio that could blow the roof off his elite agency. And it's an especially explosive situation . . . because the love affair is his own.

Since this is the first book in the Private series it mostly focuses on the characters while Private solves 3 cases. It's a good read, I just wish that instead of following three cases and quickly solving them at the end, that they would have concentrated on 1 or 2.

This is the first in this series by the "Patterson Book Factory ", and I enjoyed it enough to want to read the second in the series at some point. The development of the various characters, and their relationships with one another is as much at the center of this story, as is catching the bad guy. Overall, a good easy read.

A strong 4.5, rounded up to 5. Really a top-notch effort by Patterson and his co-author Maxine Paetro. (She also co-wrote many of the Women's Murder Club books, which I also really enjoyed.) I really have a hard time coming up with anything negative to say; the writing is strong, especially the dialog; the characters are solid and complex; the whodunits and why-dun-its are well thought out and well-hidden - that is to say, I didn't have this one figured out well before the story was over.

I like the concept of an ensemble cast; even though Jack Morgan is the head of the agency, and the main character (and the only one with first-person dialog), the other members of his staff are well-rounded, realistic characters. I can see any one of them being the central character in future books in the series.

There have been other of Patterson's series where, after reading the first book, I've vowed not to read any more; this book actually has me looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

The Private series is my only exposure to Patterson, apparently one of the most prolific writers out there. This particular version - Private - is like a B- maybe. Easily read, interesting enough but a tad formulaic with some loose ends quickly and too cutely wrapped up at the end.

Patterson's penchant for co-authors is a double-edged sword. While on one hand it lets him crank out the goods on the other each book can be an uneven and unfair comparison to others in the series. Having enjoyed other collaborations with Maxine Paetro this one left me a little cold. A good read if down with the flu (as I was) as it will not tax you, but not much more than that.

I was quite disappointed with the ending, specially since the rest of the book was okay, better than other Patterson/Paetro collaborations. However, the ending was rushed and totally out of character for the hero (where did all the rage go?).

CSI-flavored weak plot with lots of almost-recognizable names that make it fun enough to read until the end. Nothing wrong with bubblegum if it weren't for the very weak and extremely predictable plot

I've now read two in this series and I think I'm finished with it. Although the novels contain some interesting premises, I can't quite care about the staff of Private or their various life issues. And there often ends up being very little "thrill" to these thrillers.

Great romp with fast paced nonstop action typical of James Patterson.
