"The Martian Chronicles" by Ray Bradbury is considered to be one of the greatest works of science fiction of all time.

Modern space exploration has proven that the romantic Mars of Bradbury's imagination does not exist nor could it ever have existed. Like Edgar Rice Burroughs' Barsoom novels or Jonathan Swift's "Gulliver's Travels", this collection of interrelated short stories should be more correctly viewed as fantasy and allegory. They are a chronicle of the hopes and fears that existed at the time they were written.

"The Martian Chronicles" is an American classic that shares more in common with Edgar Lee Master's "Spoon River Anthology" or Thornton Wilder's "Our Town" than it does with any story written about Mars since the dawn of actual space exploration. It is a statement about the American mentality of manifest destiny, vulgar materialism, atomic angst and McCarthyism in the 1950's. In one sense it is timeless. In another, it can never be separated from the cultural milieu in which it was written.

This audio dramatization is of excellent quality. I recommend it equally for those who have never read the collection and those who have read it many times.

This book is more "churchy" than I remember.

Hard to follow the narrative through the structural devices used just through the audio. Contains some striking scenes and sub-plots.

Poetic though sometimes bleak. I enjoy the art that Bradbury creates with his words, often more than the stories themselves.
