I LOVED the style of the prose of this book, and the way the author describes things makes you feel like you are really there. Towards the end, there are a few sad parts, and the author succeeds in giving you a feeling of loss. I thought the premise of this book was interesting, because I love wolves, and I thought it was cool that the werewolves were wolves in winter and humans in summer as opposed to the full moon thing. I really liked the characters Beck and Shelby, and I thought the cover design was BEAUTIFUL. However, I didn't like the love at first sight romance, and Sam and Grace's 'perfect' love story was a bit annoying. It was kind of weird how it said that she was in love with him while he was a wolf and she didn't even know he was a human? Grace was a bit of a cliche character, I didn't like her much. Sam was okay, I guess, a little too perfect and nice, though. I know it's a series, but I kind of wished Sam had actually died or stayed a wolf in the end. I hated how they were all like, 'oh, yeah, he's going to stay a wolf forever, definitely, there's no way he could turn human again, oh no, so sad' and then suddenly he was HUMAN AGAIN WOW HOW DID THAT HAPPEN OH WAIT I KNOW BECAUSE IT'S FICTIONAL, and there wasn't that much of a plotline, mostly just romance... But the book does grip your attention and keep you glued to the page with the skillful writing. So... I don't really know what I think of the book. I would definitely recommend reading it, though.

I love Maggie Stiefvater, a lot, but I’d held off on her werewolf books, as I referred to them in my mind, for a very long time. But I finally got curious, and here I am. And – I don’t know. This is extremely Twilight-y. It would be a GREAT readalike for Twilight fans, and it also is significantly better written, without a lot of the creepy stalking behavior and problematic gender politics, so for all of that, hooray. I had trouble buying the insta-love between Sam and Grace, though, and, like in Twilight… not that much actually happens? And yet, it’s compulsively readable, and I’ll totally read the sequels. Fans of teen paranormal romance will love this (actually, I’m sure they’ve all already read it, but whatever), and Maggie Stiefvater is a really talented writer, so I guess my verdict on this is: somehow significantly better than it should have been.

If you love teen romance novels, with a little paranormal flair then this is one for you. It is a series, so the fun doesn't have to stop here.

Grace was just the girl from the house behind the woods. She was the wolf girl and she had been ever since her algid abduction when she was young. It was said that she was dragged into the woods by a group of wolves like many others before her …. Yet she was the only one to survive. Year’s later people still question why this happened, but Grace never cared why, she was more allured by the docile wolf with golden eyes that saved her. She watched the wolf as he grew up, never truly knowing that he was watching her too. Sam was the unknown wolf that adored Grace, and Grace was the girl that hid his secret. Grace loved the wolves and made sure to protect them, especially the one that meant the most to her. He was unable to escape the curse thrust upon him and continued to fight for the girl he loved. This is the first of a trilogy by Maggie Stiefvater, who perfectly captures the love story of a girl and the wolf that got away. - @BakerBooks of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

this is so good. I was expecting something totally different and I was pretty impressed. At about the end I started crying and had to stop reading 'cause I couldn't see the words. I can't wait to read the next two books. So glad I read this

I really enjoyed reading the book, there was something to look forward to on every page. I'm very excited to read the next 2 books in the series. Hopefully Grace and Sam will be together in the end!

This was definitively "meh". It focused too much on the romance (I know, I can't believe I'm saying that) and frankly the romance was a little creepy. It needed to be fleshed out more. Probably won't read the sequel.

“Sam came around the side of the car and stopped dead when he saw me. “Oh my God, what is THAT?” I used my thumb and middle finger to flick the multicolored pom-pom on top of my head. “In my language, we call it a HAT. It keeps my ears warm.” “Oh my God,” Sam said again, and closed the distance between us. He cupped my face in his hands and studied me. “It’s horribly cute.” He kissed me, looked at the hat, and then he kissed me again. I vowed never to lose the pom-pom hat.”

“Sensitive," I tried.

Sam translated: "Squishy."

"Creative."

"Dangerously emo."

"Thoughtful."

"Feng shui."

I laughed so hard I snorted. "How do you get feng shui out of 'thoughtful'?"

"You know, because in feng shui, you arrange furniture and plants and stuff in thoughtful ways." Sam shrugged. "To make you calm. Zenlike. Or something. I'm not one hundred percent sure how it all works, besides the thoughtful part.”

“We had this big grill at his house, and I remember, one night he said, 'Sam, tonight you're feeding us,' He showed me how to push on the middle of the steaks to see how done they were, and how to sear them fast on each side to keep the juices in."
"And they were awesome, weren't they?"
"I burned the hell out of them," I said, matter-of-fact. "I'd compare them to charcoal, but charcoal is still sort of edible.”

“And then I opened my eyes and it was just Grace and me - nothing anywhere but Grace and me - she pressing her lips together as though she were keeping my kiss inside her, and me, holding this moment that was as fragile as a bird in my hands.”

Sexual Content: There is a lot of kissing, and the main characters do advance their relationship in certain ways by the end of the novel, but its nothing too descriptive.
