A wildly original and hilarious debut novel about the typical high school experience: the homework, the awkwardness, and the mutant creatures from another galaxy.

When Darren Bennett meets Eric Lederer, there's an instant connection. They share a love of drawing, the bottom rung on the cruel high school social ladder and a pathological fear of girls.  Then Eric reveals a secret: He doesn't sleep. Ever.  When word leaks out about Eric's condition, he and Darren find themselves on the run. Is it the government trying to tap into Eric's mind, or something far darker?  It could be that not sleeping is only part of what Eric's capable of, and the truth is both better and worse than they could ever imagine.

The voice of 15-year-old Darren Bennett perfectly expresses the thoughts and high school experiences of a geeky, self-conscious introvert who fills notebooks full of sketches in preparation for the day he releases an epic sci-fi movie trilogy/novel series. An amusing read with laugh-out-loud moments and a strange twist of magic realism.

I found this book entertaining and the characters feelings and reactions to everyday life very much like I remember high school. The sci-fi aspect made it interesting and quite different. I bought a copy for my teenage nephew's birthday.

The Gawker blog has a post about a high school student asking Yahoo! Answers for a summary of this book (The Boy Who Couldn't Sleep And Never Had To by D. C. Pierson), only to have the author respond!

Terrible. I couldn't even finish it. Returned it when I was half way through.

I liked this, I think. it's a weird little book that takes a turn from odd to fantasy about 160 pages it. I have to ponder this one a while.

I'm glad others found this novel to be engaging. While I really wanted to enjoy it i found it difficult to believe in the characters at times. I wasn't able to make the sci fi leap either. Definitely an interesting concept though.

DC Pierson. Darren is into comics, superheroes, video games, and drawing. He isn’t the most popular kid in school, but the focus of the book isn’t on that but rather the friendship between Darren and his new friend Eric. Eric isn’t the most popular kid in school either, they both share a love of superheroes, video games, and the two embark on a friendship fueled by making a comic book together. About 50 pages in Eric reveals that he doesn’t sleep—AT ALL. The voices of Eric and Darren are authentic, I feel their geekdom (this is in the best possible way), their exchanges about comics and bands, and Darren’s brother, it feels real.
