This is a 1956 French drama directed by René Clément based on the novel L'Assommoir by Émile Zola.
It depicts a working-class woman in the mid-nineteenth century.
Gervaise played by Maria Schell copes with the descent of her husband into alcoholism while making her dream come true.
It is quite interesting to view a horse-driven ambulance and the primitive yet clamorous conditions of a wash-house.
The fight between Gervaise and a bad-mouthing woman in the wash-house is such a sight that it is more fun than seeing women's professional wrestling.
