While still plenty heavy, Mastodon's fourth album foregrounds prog elements (long songs, complex instrumental parts, a theme) for an album that is both intricate and visceral. A loose concept album incorporating Rasputin, astral travel and the drummer's sister Skye, who committed suicide, this is an excellent example of the new wave of American metal.
This is one of the best progressive metal albums that exist. Mastodon's sound emerges as a layered, psychedelic complexity while retaining all the intensity and heaviness of their sludge roots. This album is beautiful.
