I found the movie much more difficult to follow than other performances I've see, both DVD's and live performances. To me, the director and producer have taken great liberties with Shakespeare's play, and not for the better. Also, Olivier's performance is stilted and highly dated. Claire Bloom's performance as Queen Anne is simply stunning.

If you want to see "the real deal", then borrow "The Hollow Crown". It covers Henry VI, Parts 1 and 2, and also Richard III. In order to understand what's going on, you have seen / read the two Henry VI plays first.

Laurence Olivier and his monologues will embody an unforgettable portrayal of Shakespeare's Richard III in your minds. Although, I didn't like much the battle scenes and those ridicules bows. Which of course are acceptable if you consider that the Olivier's adaptation of Richard III is something between a movie and an Elizabethan Theater.

Regarding Richard talking to the camera too often:
That's the point! Richard makes the viewer his accomplice in his plans.

This is a 1955 British film adaptation of William Shakespeare's historical play of the same name, also incorporating elements from his Henry VI, Part 3.
It was directed and produced by Laurence Olivier, who also played the lead role.
Although the starting scene is splendid, this DVD stops when it reaches at the point after 58 minutes.
Apparently this DVD (31383071197696) has been damaged.
I've tried to continue several times at different chapters but to no avail.
I don't think this film adaptation is well done from the play because the main character talks to the camera too often.
I don't like it at all.

It was well done. I enjoyed it. It was comprehensive.
